This is a place where I share my ideas and my writing and put into practice my hopes for greater connection, critical thinking and clear expression amongst people who care about our world, our communities, and each other. Social and political issues, writing, language, fathers and fathering - these are some of the things you'll find here.

About Me
- Name: Mark Lawrence
- Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
I am a writer and a reader, and believe in the power of words and images to make a difference. I make a basic living helping other people's words look good, and need to express my ideas in my own words and images to keep sane. I am also a father: my two young sons are currently the joy and challenge of my life, and I'm loving it.

But the smell.....
… is divine!
Nah, I concede, the smell can be quite overpowering and puts a fair number off the fruit.
But if you can get past the powerful smell, the flavour is wonderful!
BTW, these were frozen Thai durian, from a Brisbane suburban Asian grocery (and defrosted, of course). I'm not turning my nose up at these when I see them in local markets and shops in Melbourne next. You can only hold out for the 'real' thing so long – especially when so long is over ten years (since I've eaten durian!).
But the smell.....
Are durian (durians?) available in Melbounrne?
Hi parlance, yes durians are available in Melbourne. Usually in Asian groceries in Victoria Street in Richmond, and I have occassionally seen them at Preston Market. I have previously turned my nose up at them when I've seen them here, because they are frozen, and from Thailand, but now I won't.
BTW, my brother-in-law tells me they are growing durians in the Top End - Northern Territory- but most of the prize fruit are bought by rich Japanese. It seems they fly in to Darwin to visit the orchards and purchase these prize fruit for hundreds of dollars or so when they are still on the tree, and have them flown to Japan.
Similar things happen to some prize durian varieties in Malaysia, which is why you can't find them so easily in Australia.
I wouldn't go that far.
A bit like black truffles or caviar, isn't it?
